Frequently asked questions

What exactly is Iyengar Yoga?

Iyengar yoga descends from the most classical Hatha yoga tradition. It has evolved into a precise and clear method that’s easily understood by the modern practitioner. Lots of attention is paid to the technical alignment of the poses to keep the mind drawn inwards, but also focused and connected to reality. For more information visit the Iyengar Yoga page.

What should I wear?

Wear unrestrictive clothing with ankles and knees visible for safety. Shorts and a t-shirt are ideal. Yoga is practised on bare feet. Clothing should not trail on the floor.

Can I eat before class?

You should leave at least 4 hours after a main meal and 1 hour after a light snack before practising yoga. Otherwise, you will be diverting your body from its attempts to digest and you will feel uncomfortable.

I’m not very flexible, will it be suitable for me?

Yoga is for all. You don’t need to be fit or flexible to take part. We teach the use of yoga props as devised by BKS Iyengar which can help even the very stiff to benefit from yoga. Practised diligently, it will improve your flexibility as well as strength and stamina. Yoga also brings firmness and stability to very flexible bodies.

How often should I come?

Although you can attend one class per week, it is best if possible if you come at least twice. Many people come three times a week. The more often you come then the quicker your progress will be.

Do I need to book or can I “drop-in” to classes?

You will need to use the online booking system to secure your space. You will also be less tempted to miss classes if you’ve already booked! Many of our students find that the pre-booking system helps motivate them to come to class and once they come they always say they are glad they did. It also means other demands of life are less likely to encroach on your “me time”.

I have an injury, can I attend classes?

It depends on the nature and extent of the injury or health problem. Sometimes it is advisable to rest and let the body recover before coming to class. In many instances, Iyengar Yoga will help with the problem as long as the practice is done carefully and with expert guidance. It might be necessary to adapt some poses, use props or avoid others as we advise. We have classes at varying levels of difficulty and group size and also a yoga therapy class for those with significant problems. Please call us if you’re concerned and we can discuss which of our classes would best meet your needs.

What about health problems?

Again it depends on the nature of the health problem. If you have a fever it is best to rest at home until you are better. If you have had any diarrhoea or vomiting again you should stay away until at least 48 hours after the last episode. If you are not sure then please call us.
